The family should be the physical and mental place where we recognize ourselves, where we can feel safe and respected, where we can grow and develop our projects. Unfortunately, this is not always the case; and even when a single member of the family, for example a son or daughter, is the only one to show suffering and discomfort compared to all the others, it is still the entire family that suffers, that is solicited by it, bringing within it wounds that compromise precisely those vital basic functions that represent the prerequisites for well-being. The family can become a place of suffering. My work with families consists of an intervention that allows its functioning to be brought back to a state of adequate well-being for all its members, no one excluded, identifying the pathological dynamics, reactivating communication between members, strengthening basic roles. When a family, traditional or separated - because even a separated family continues to be a family, perhaps only on a mental level - reports suffering that comes from being together, it needs more than ever to stop and reunite in a place shielded from the outside world where they can meet, express themselves and listen to each other, a place where they can recognize each other, feel welcomed and reconnect. The psychotherapy office is the place where it is possible to welcome the emotional experiences of each member and represent them by giving them a story and a meaning, making them coexist as a significant peculiar part of the family system. It is an effective work of understanding, of abandoning masks, of clarification, where the suffering of one or more members can be taken on by all the others to find a dynamic balance and re-establish the strength of being a family by restoring its functions of care, security and growth.
